Ever wanted to go bold and bring some color into your home, but aren’t sure where to start?
We know the feeling. Choosing all new furniture or décor can be a long and tedious process – but one fun, affordable and easy way to bring the color in is using accent walls in your home. A gallon of paint and some supplies is all it takes to bring that dream to life.
What is an accent wall? It is an exterior or interior wall that has a different color, shade, design or material from the other walls around it, causing it to stand out.
Outside of being bold and bringing color, an accent wall has other pros like:
- Adding Depth | Painting just one accent wall, door, or even your ceiling can add depth to your space.
- Feel Larger | In small spaces, a darker accent wall paired with 3 lighter walls can make the room feel more spacious.
- Adding a Focal Point | An accent wall can create a focal point in the room, drawing your eyes in and highlighting that area of the space.
An accent wall can be more than just paint too. Think patterns, stone, tile, wood, or colors like metallics to really bring a new dimension to your space. It also works if you’re keeping your room neutral – A dark brown wall in a neutral space can be just as effective as a bright room with a dark, bold color like black, blue or red.
When choosing your paint color, look around at what items/furniture will be on or near the wall (pillows, wall décor, headboard) and find one that fits well. The accent color should complement those colors and create enough of a contrast without the risk of that color clashing.
Beginners should start with one dark wall alongside 3 lighter colored walls. Those with more design experience can try one light accent wall with 3 dark walls, but that takes a bit more expertise and an eye for design for that to work in a space.
That’s all it takes when using accent walls in your home! Follow the simple rules above and you’ll be bringing bold colors into your home in no time.
